MADISON COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
Motor Grader Operator / Laborer
May include, but not be limited to, periodic grading, pulling, resurfacing and reconstruction of unpaved roads, set up of appropriate temporary traffic control work zones for work activities, and daily maintenance and safety checks of
equipment. Additional responsibilities will include working on other Highway Dept. crews to assist with workload, and other related duties associated with employment as an equipment operator / laborer at a Highway Department.
Operation of a motor grader and/or other heavy excavating equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Ability to drive and operate a tandem dump truck.
Must be able to work well and communicate with the public and with co-workers.
Operate the motor grader and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
Precisely operate grader blade to windrow gravel to the center of the road.
Operate grader controls to regulate height and angle of the grader blade and lower scarifier to loosen packed soil to permit grading.
Precisely clip road shoulders without disturbance of pavement to ensure proper water runoff from road surface in to roadside ditches.
Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
Drive grader in successive passes over working area, observing reference stakes or hand signals of other workers, to level the surface to the specified grade.
Operate Grader on public roadways, maintaining proper awareness of one’s surroundings.
Finish grade base surface preparation to within half an inch.
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure smooth operation of the grader.
Demonstrate proper awareness of blade wear during operation to prevent any damage to moldboard.
Ensure grader is in proper gear, and is not moving too fast for working conditions.
Demonstrate an understanding of grades.
Train new/other employees in the safe and efficient operation of the grader.
Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required.
High School graduate. Valid Tennessee Class ‘B’ Commercial Driver’s License, minimum. 2-3 years minimum experience operating a motor grader. Other heavy excavating equipment experience a plus.
