STD Control

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are those diseases that are spread from one individual to another through sexual contact. West Tennessee and Madison County have historically had one of the highest rates of STDs in the nation. Our disease rate regularly ranks Madison County among the top five counties in Tennessee in the incidence of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Over the last several years, there has been a rise in the incidence of Syphilis.

The Health Department is responsible for reporting and managing cases of Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in West Tennessee. Working with private physician practices to report cases across the county helps ensure the safety of the public and prevent disease outbreak.

Individuals with known STDs or those who are concerned about exposure to a STD can seek testing and treatment at the Health Department. Our STD staff is trained in methods of disease intervention and provides counseling and management for individuals with STDs. All of the services are conducted in total confidence and in most situations at little or no cost. Testing for STDs is provided Monday through Friday. For an appointment, please call 731-423-3020, option 2 then option 1.
